Project Anandi: "Empowering Adolescent Girls in Rural India with Health Education"

Even after the elixir of independence, is 'she' really happy in our rural India? How successful we have been in providing her with basic health care facilities. The answer is certainly not satisfactory when considering women in rural areas. Health issues are neglected due to financial constraints. However, some individuals and organizations are making sincere efforts to change this picture. Through this initiative “Project Anandi”, adolescent girls are given health counselling by visiting schools in rural areas. 

For the past few months, Team Anandi has visited a total of 125+ schools and carried out the task of reaching more than 10,000+ girls. Under this initiative team, Project Anandi goes to villages and interacts with girls at the school level. Workshops are held in various schools on various topics such as misconceptions about menstruation, diet, exercise, care to be taken during menstruation, hygiene, anaemia, menopause, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. Girls are being made aware of this by providing deep science and pure information.

By telling the school girls about menstruation in simple language, the doubts on the subject were cleared. This has freed teenage girls from the yoke of prejudicial thinking associated with menstruation by getting scientific information about their health. By getting scientific information about their menstruation, girls are getting a new awareness of their feminine power and purity. Another important problem faced by school girls is touching by strangers. About such shame-inducing touch, Team Anandi's volunteers explain the meaning of touch in simple language.

The girls are cautioned by identifying the motives behind the touching and discussing how to counter it. It was seen that the confidence of the girls increased from such discussions. The girls started talking freely about it on their own. The questions that have been lingering in the mind due to traditional shyness have been aptly answered in the form of Team Anandi. Girls are now spontaneously asking questions without any pressure. The budding buds of rural areas have got a soulmate in the form of Team Anandi.
